Camp Scene
Turtlestar led the arrogant black ghost tabby and the timid blue she-cat through the clan’s rolling hill territory. A few times she found she’d have to pause because her long limbs had taken her across the terrain quicker then the journey wearied cats. They quickly try to catch up and it didn’t take long for Turtlestar to notice the blue she-cat had a slight limp. Curiosity prickled at her mind as to how the young cat got hurt but she kept her questions to herself, she didn’t even know the cat’s name yet. She tried not to think about it much as they made their way through the land. She was grateful when she came up on the clan’s main camp entrance.
The entrance of the camp wasn’t really an entrance like most would think, it was just a worn out dirt path carves by the millions of paws that treaded it throughout the years. The camp itself wasn’t any different from the entrance, it didn’t have any walls or barriers but just sat in the dip of two hills. A pawful of cats sat up on the hills either looking down at the camp or out at the rolling hills.
“Welcome, to your new home.” Turtle called over her shoulder as she led the two cats down the path.
“This is a camp?” Lizardsun scoffed as he trotted up to her side.
Turtlestar had to keep herself from rolling her eyes in repy. “Yes, this is the clan’s main camp.”
“Main camp?”
Lizardsun stopped walking for a moment and looked at Turtlestar with confusion. She only purred and nodded.
“Yes. But you won’t get to see the other camps for awhile. Till we now you can be trusted. Now, follow me! I will show you the camp.”
There wasn’t much in the camp. In fact, at first glance Lizardsun didn’t even think it was a camp but just a dip in the hills where a few rabbit burrows laid. Don’t tell me they live in there burrows. Lizardsun cringed at the thought of living under the ground in the dirt.
“The first leader of the Bluegrass found this abandoned rabbit warren. It turned out to be the best place for our warriors and apprentices to sleep. Down we go.”
Turtlestar slipped into the burrow with a smug grin on her face. She’d seen the horror in Lizardsun’s face at the thought of going underground. She knew it was kit like to try and get under this cat’s skin like he did hers.
It took a moment for all of their eyes to adjust to the darkness under the ground but once they did the cats could slightly see the wide winding tunnels. Turtlestar followed the tunnel with her nose in the air scenting the air. First a left then a right then then another left or was that a right? Finally, they came to a a giant den. It could probably fit the entire clan within it. The ground for the most part here was flat but there was a small rock platform in the middle of the ‘den’. Dim light shone down on the rock from a few small holes at the top of the burrow.
“This is the main part of the burrow. Meetings are usually held here. To the right there is a connecting den that is mostly cool rocks. That is where you will find the freshkill pile. Next to that you will find another tunnel that will lead you to the soldier’s den, you will sleep there Lizardsun. Across the main rock, straight a head of us, you will find the tunnel that will lead you to the trainee’s den. Your friend will be able to sleep there. Over on the left you will see another tunnel. That is the sick cat den. The medic is usually there although Gnatbuzz does have other den’s throughout the territory. Unless someone is sick he will only be here once or twice a week. I do not have a den at this location so on nights that I stay here I will either be here in the center or with the rest of you soldiers. Any questions?”
Lizardsun’s whiskers twitched and he shuffled his paws uncomfortably. “How do you not get lost in this maze?”
“You will soon understand our smells. They will lead you where you need to go here in the dark. Don’t worry you will soon adjust to the tight space of underground.”
"Do you no have kits and elders here?"
"We keep our nursery and elders in a more secure location from here. But don't worry they always have guards with them."
“What about the dirt place?”
Turtlestar couldn’t help laughing at the tom’s question even though it was a valid one.
“We don’t have a dirt place. Just please make sure you leave the burrow and the den. Go as far away as possible.”
“C-c-can we go rest now?”
The blue she-cat piped up. The first time she’d even spoken. The fear in the she-cat’s big green eyes told Turtlestar that these cats had been through more than she could imagine. With a soft purr she nodded her head in response. “Yes. Go rest. I will have one of my Lieutenants bring you both some freshkill in a bit.”
Tentatively the two cats walked away towards their designated dens. Turtlestar watched the young she cat go and sighed. Her heart hurt for the poor thing. She hoped that whatever had happened this place could be a refuge for her.
